Last weekend I traveled to DC with my husband to attend his Saxophone Symposium.
It was a lovely little getaway, but it was only the second week into the new year and I didn't want to completely sabotage my new intentions.
Now, that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy a glass of wine at one of our favorite wineries, or share a piece of Key Lime pie after dinner. I mean, it was my birthday week!
But I was conscious of this trip and my intentions when I was packing and planning, and made choices that would help me stay on track. (If you noticed, I said "shared" a piece of pie!)
Here are a few things that I did to stick to my intentions while being away from home.
1. Snacks. What would a road trip be without snacks? But instead of grabbing a bag of chips or chewy candy (my vice!), I opted for a bag of raw almonds and a banana. And let me tell you - I was very happy to have had those almonds stashed in my bag for the entire weekend! The weekend was a lot of "go, go, go" and there were times that I needed a little pick-me-up in between meals.
2. Hydration. I actually forgot to pack my water bottle (even though I had it on my packing list!). But I made sure to grab a SmartWater on the road, and stayed hydrated throughout the entire trip. Not only is water important for general health, but travel constipation is a thing! Drinking lots of water can prevent that from happening.
3. Exercise. I knew that our hotel had a fitness center and an indoor swimming pool. I packed a swimsuit, workout clothes, and any equipment that I would need to get my workout in. I sadly didn't get to go swimming, but I did make it to the fitness center!
4. Eat your veggies. When traveling, you most likely aren't going to be able to prepare your own meals. But you can choose better options when dining out! I tend to gravitate toward dishes that offer the most veggies, and add a side salad for good measure. For brunch, I opted for the mixed greens and a side of fresh fruit over the pancakes.
5. Enjoy. Being healthy doesn't equate to being perfect. If you strive to be 100% with your diet and exercise all the time, chances are you won't be able to stick to your goals for very long. Remember, choosing to be healthy is so that you can enjoy life to the fullest! So, enjoy!
